The GVI Program’s Video “Ripple Effect: Addressing the Lasting Impact of Gun Violence Through Community Action” was selected to be featured as part of the 2025 APHA Public Health Film Festival. The film will be shown during the Film Festival Brown Bag Lunch Session II on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, for conference attendees.

The long-term impact of gun violence continues to afflict our communities at every level, local, state, and national. Firearm-related incidents not only affect the victims of gun violence, but they also have a ripple effect that impacts the perpetrator, both families involved, and the broader community. So, the question becomes: How can we raise awareness about the lasting consequences of firearm violence? How can we come together to educate, support, and provide resources to ensure the safety of our community?

In partnership with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, local faith-based leaders, and community service agencies, the St. Mary’s County Health Department launched the Group Violence Intervention (GVI) program. GVI is a proven, evidence-based strategy focused on reducing firearm violence, particularly group-involved gun violence and homicides. By working closely with law enforcement, trusted community advocates, and social service providers, GVI directly engages individuals at high risk for firearm violence. The program offers a clear moral message against violent behavior and extends a sincere offer of help to those seeking change and provides access to community resources.

This film will take you on a journey through the stories of families who have been directly affected by firearm violence.
